The City

A Formalist View of American Urban Architecture

William W. Fuller has been photographing American cities with his large format camera for nearly forty years. Fuller has driven across the United States dozens of times. During his travels, he has visited, explored, and photographed Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Chicago, Minneapolis, St. Louis, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Miami, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Denver, Phoenix, Houston, and Atlanta. In black and white, he compresses cityscapes into layered, graphic compositions.

Although the locations of each picture are not named in the titles, the pictures are not portraits of particular cities: rather than depict their landmark architecture or distinctive skylines, Fuller mines the urban landscape for dynamic compositions of shape, line, form, negative space, light and shadow. This modernist approach to photographing the landscape results in a collection of images that are universally appealing in their clean, crisp and cool elegance.

The Photographs 1980–1990

Photographs: 1980-1990 is a limited edition book of 50 archivally processed and toned gelatin silver prints. The images are approximately 5 x 7 inches printed horizontally on 8 x 10 paper and dry mounted on Rives archival paper. The wording is hand-lettered and the book is bound and slipcased by Roswell Bookbinding in Phoenix. The first 12 were purchased by various photography dealers, the Center for Creative Photography, and the Burton Barr Library Rare Book Collection. Twelve more were produced and a few remain. The price is $1200.00.

The images in the book are of buildings in various small towns and cities across the United States. For years, I traveled extensively within the U.S. Always on the lookout for compositions that appealed to me, I loved exploring out-of-the-way towns and back streets of cities. All of the images were taken with a 4 x 5 large format field camera on black and white film and processed in a traditional darkroom. Although these images were taken decades ago, and a second volume was planned but never produced, I am still drawn by and still photograph this subject matter.
